Advice for consumers

This game was rated PEGI 18 for frequent strong violence towards human characters, including vulnerable and defenceless people, strong language and gambling. Not suitable for persons under 18 years of age.

Brief outline of the game

Bioshock Infinite Complete Edition encompasses four games. The original game and Clash in the Clouds DLC are set in floating dystopia, Columbia, in 1912 and focus on Booker DeWitt’s attempt to liberate Elizabeth from the city’s crazed ‘Prophet’. Burial at Sea Parts 1 and 2 are set in Rapture, an underwater city founded on radical libertarian principles in the early fifties, and sees Booker and Elizabeth return on the eve of the city’s demise.

Content specific issues

These games were rated PEGI 18 for graphic bloody violence. Gross violence includes graphic burning of enemies, decapitation, the use of a gun which microwaves enemies, causing them to explode in a cloud of blood, or impalement on a rotating drill. There are several instances of violence towards vulnerable and defenceless people in the Burial at Sea DLCs, including an instance in which a little girl is flushed out of a functioning heating vent or another in which the same girl is restrained and has an ice pick inserted into her eye socket. Bioshock Infinite features the words ‘fuck’ and ‘fucker’. Burial at Sea features slot machines in a mall, which the player is able to use and can win.

Other issues

The games are set in historical dystopias, which mimic radical American politics from the 20th century. As a result, there are parts of Bioshock Infinite and its DLCs which include offensive and discriminatory language. Such references include words such as ‘gook’, ‘chink’, ‘paddy’, ‘negroes’, ‘coloured people’, ‘negress’, ‘yellow’, ‘injuns’, ‘orientals’, ‘slant’, ‘slant-eyed’ and ‘darkies’. However, within the narrative of the two dystopian societies, these references are not condoned overall. There are also occasional instances of mild swearing, with words such as ‘shit’, ‘bastard’, ‘whore’, ‘damn’, ‘Jesus’ and ‘bitch’. Also in keeping with its historical context, there are parts of the Burial at Sea DLCs which encourage alcohol and tobacco use, such as an increase in health when the player drinks or overt advertisement of cigarettes. The same DLCs also allude to disturbing issues such as human trafficking and child abuse.

Brief outline of the game

Sci-fi first person shooter. Game takes place in the technologically advanced city of 'New Eden' originally created in the early 1900s.

Content specific issues

The game contains graphic bloody violence throughout including decapitation and horrific injuries.

Other issues

The game is set in a dystopian future which mimics the social mores of early 20th century America. As a result, the game narrative contains visual and verbal references of a discriminatory nature which may cause some discomfort for some people. Visual and verbal references include words and terms such as gook, chink, paddy, negroes, coloured people, negress, yellow, injuns, orientals, and one period song in the game where the lyric contains the word “darkies”. However, it is clear in the narrative that these references are as a result of a totalitarian regime that rules the city and these references and behaviour are not condoned overall. There are also occasional instances of swear words such as: shit, damn, hell, whore, ass, bastard, goddamn, Jesus, and bitch. The player has no control over what lines are spoken in specific instances.
