The story is based on Celtic mythology and Norse mythology. The game is focused on the player’s character Senua's point of view, as she embarks on a very personal journey through a hellish underworld made up of Senua's psychotic manifestations of her reality and mind.

One of the cinematic sequences however does contain a scene in which the player’s character is set alight, agonised loud screams can be heard as she runs, with flames engulfing most of her body. She eventually falls to the ground; her skin is charred and she dies. The game also contains use of the word "Fuck".

Other issues

Central character suffers from psychosis which is manifest as hallucinations (visions and flashbacks) and delusions. She hears voices all the time in her head. Schizophrenia is also a symptom.

A malevolent force known only as Lina is devouring data from a vast, interdimensional network of servers overseen by sentient computers called ”motes.” In desperation, the motes summon heroes from a variety of parallel game worlds to face off against each other in one-on-one combat.

Violence in this game is regarded as moderate, characters fight each other using a variety of styles and weapons. Regardless of whether a weapon or hands or feet are used the severity of the violence depicted remains the same, save for the exaggerated responses of a character. Hits to the body of a character result in a reduction in their health until it reaches zero and the round ends. Sexual posturing is an infrequent event, an example is an image of a female with very large breasts and a fleur de lys shape that just covers her nipples. The image is full screen and the point of view is from below her breasts looking up.
