Advice for consumers

This game was rated PEGI 7 because it features violence that lacks any apparent harm or injury to fantasy or mythical beings and creatures and contains non-realistic violence in a child-friendly setting or context.

Brief outline of the game

Rec room is a virtual reality social club where you play active games with friends from all around the world. You can customize your appearance, then party up to play multiplayer games like Paintball, 3D Charades, and other co-op adventures.

Content specific issues

One game lays its emphasis on an action RPG. Here you dress up as a knight, archer or wizard and walk through the corridors of a high school. These corridors are dressed up with musical/theatre looking objects. Wooden trees, wooden forts, etc. It gives you the impression you are in a medieval outside environment. At certain points in a level wooden/cardboard animated orcs and bats appear. You must hit these with your wizard stick, sword or crossbow. When hit, they either fall over or disintegrate into pieces, showing that they are nothing more than animated set-pieces. Because you actually swing a sword or reload your bow, the feeling that you’re being attacked in VR makes this all feel a bit more serious. Occasionally a red, angry looking orc attacks you. This guy is a bit scarier than the others. All in all, the intensity of the violence is enough to warrant a PEGI 7 violence rating.

Other issues

When playing paintball, you have a variety of paintball guns at your disposal. When you hit a character, you’ll see a message that you hit someone. The character hit by you, is then enveloped in cubes and transported back to the spawn area. No harm is done to these characters. When you are hit, your screen greys out, a message appears that you got hit and you’re transported back to the spawn place.
