Violence in this game is mostly towards fantasy characters as you travel through dungeons. When hit, the characters flash white and eventually collapse and disappear in a puff of purple smoke. The human character reacts in a similar way – flashing white when hit but when defeated, she collapses to the floor with a sigh and the game restarts. There are also boss battles with large monsters that may be scary to younger children.

Brief outline of the game

The world has fallen under the control of the Shinra Electric Power Company, a shadowy corporation controlling the planet's life force. In the city of Midgar, an anti-Shinra organization calling themselves Avalanche have stepped up their resistance. Cloud Strife, a former member of Shinra's SOLDIER now turned mercenary, lends his aid to the group.

One instance shows a group of men being beaten up in hand to hand combat. The reactions to the violence are realistic in nature, with the men screaming and grunting in pain as they are beaten and knocked unconscious. Another pertinent scene shows two characters being stabbed through the chest. While the initial penetration is obscured from the camera, you can later see the blade impaling them and their panicked reaction to being attacked. After the blade is removed, their bodies slump to the floor where they remain.

Bright lights and magical effects appear on impact of the attacks, and large numbers show the amount of damage inflicted with each attack. Characters have little to no reaction to the violence with no visible injuries present. When the enemies have been defeated, they will fall to the floor and quickly vanish from the battlefield. When a character on the players team is defeated, they will fall to the floor and remain there motionless until an item known as a “Phoenix Down” is used, this item is then able to revive them. This game also contains infrequent depictions of realistic violence of a minor nature towards a human-like character. The most pertinent example of this is when a girl punches her brother in the face. While his reaction to the violence is realistic he only holds his nose for a short while before returning to normal with no visible injuries.
