Advice for consumers

This game has been rated PEGI 16 for depictions of realistic looking violence towards human-like characters, use of sexual expletives, and encouragement/teaching of gambling. Not suitable for persons under 16 years of age.

Brief outline of the game

Persona 5 Royal follows the story of a Japanese high-school student as he is pulled into a fantasy world that mirrors the real one. Using powers granted by the Metaverse, the protagonist and his friends work as a group of thieves to enter the subconscious of various antagonists to steal a treasure which forces a change of heart in the real world.

Content specific issues

This game features depictions of realistic looking violence towards human-like characters, this is primarily shown during cutscenes. In one scene a character is shot through the head, their head then slams down onto a desk in a pool of blood. This game also contains infrequent use of sexual expletives, variations of the word “fuck” are heard during dialogue and in text boxes. There is a section in this game that takes place in a casino and the characters are tasked with winning a certain amount of money from slot machines to progress. Characters can gamble at slot machines and at dice games. It should be noted that this is simulated gambling and does not feature the use of real world currency or credit, nor are any financial rewards forthcoming.

Other issues

There is a sub-plot in the game which is a topical look at student-teacher relationships. It features a teacher who confesses to having inappropriate relationships with students. This also links to a plot in which one of the female students who was harassed by her teacher attempts to kill herself by throwing herself off the roof of the school.
