The game takes place on the planet Filgaia. Four adventurers, known as Drifters, find themselves chosen to wield the power of the planet's spiritual protectors, the Guardians, to stop a prophesied but unknown menace to their world.

This is a game that utilises turn based combat which can be a solo affair or one in which ‘companions’ join in the fray. Human characters use firearms of various types, whilst enemy characters wield large and small bladed weapons. Strikes to the body of a human character are masked by a flash of light, whilst the response to the violence is an exaggerated movement backwards, there are no visible signs of injury nor is there any audible utterances of pain. Cinematics in the game include a scene in which a human-like character is seen with a large sword protruding from his abdomen, there is no blood, sounds of pain / agony or facial expressions. The character responsible for inflicting the violence is not seen and the moment when the sword enters the body is not visible. The character eventually disappears.
